New Construction of a Multi-generational Residential Facility in Ilmenau
A residential facility consisting of three buildings with a total of 30 condominiums has been built at the southwestern city limits of Ilmenau, close to the site of a villa development. The development has been conscientiously kept small and legally obligated to humane measures. Thereby, the offset arrangement of the buildings creates distinguished open areas, which meet the needs of the residents for communication and private space to an equal extent.
A high percentage of the condominiums are barrier-free; some of them have even designed for wheelchairs. All of this has been designed with the concept of active independent living in a person’s own four walls as the primary design consideration. Doing so has been conscientiously oriented towards maintaining an intact network of neighborly relationships.
Generous two-story condominiums extending from the top floor to the penthouse level have been constructed. There is a marvelous view over the roofs of Ilmenau, which can be enjoyed from the large roof terraces.
The spine of the residential facility is an L-shaped building with an arcade. Space for communication has been created by the shape of the building and the semi-offset of the floors. Through the extension of the floors, semi-private open areas have been created as a foreground for the residential entryways. Each condominium has been equipped with a terrace with movable shutters. By re-arranging the shutters in connection with the natural charisma of the wooden siding, a living play can be created on the facades of the buildings.
