Park by the Ilmenau Ponds
The formerly unused area in immediate proximity to the Ilmenau Ponds is part of the brachiated Grün- und Freiflächensystems [department of parks & recreation] for the entire city The Ilmenau Ponds Nature Preserve and Local Recreational Area between the Technischen Universität [technical college] campus and the old city is not just an important potential for the development of an attractive place to relax close to the city. The path along the axis between these two prospering poles plays a role, which is just as important.
With the demolition of the former university dormitories, the subsequently created unused area could be re-cultivated and redesigned into a park. Existing and new connecting paths leading to the area were accepted, newly added and connected with the old city over a pedestrian and bicycle bridge. Thereby, the Technischen Universität of Ilmenau could now be integrated with the Ilmenau Ponds recreational area as well as the old city.
The new park supplements the park system for the local recreational area. Contoured paths lead between existing and new areas and create an impression of being deep in a forest. Thriftily placed trees follow the paths and mark intersections. The newly created open areas can be used for lying down, in part. Another area enjoys the protected status of a wetland habitat.
